We grow the spirulina using solar energy and plant-based fertiliser in our natural warm water basins in Israel. From there we harvest the algae every 10 days, filter them, remove the water and then freeze them immediately so that all the nutrients are preserved until they reach you. From 10 kilos of fresh spirulina, we make 1 kilo frozen. With 0% waste and hardly any water consumption. That's it! Of course, we regularly carry out the necessary safety checks to ensure that everything is clean and stays that way.
Spirulina is one of the oldest organisms on earth. It is a single-celled, non-toxic blue-green algae, in fact a "plant" without roots, which grows in water. The Latin word for spirulina is arthrospira = small spiral, because under a microscope it does indeed have this shape. Spirulina grows where it is warm and has many hours of sunshine, and Simpligreens pools are therefore in Israel. Its natural function in the water is that of purification, due to the chlorophyll and the phycocyanin that are naturally produced by the sunlight.
Spirulina's colourful bio-chemistry has a wide range of health benefits that enhance your body's functional performance. Chlorophyll, the green pigment that gives spirulina its colour, helps regenerate damaged liver cells and remove toxins from your blood and organs. Phycocyanin, the blue pigment found in algae, improves liver function, reduces inflammation and helps the body digest amino acids. And porphyrin, a deep purple pigment, forms the protein-rich haemoglobin that is essential for healthy red blood cells to perform metabolic processes throughout the body.

Our raw, fresh spirulina contains high levels of fast absorbing nutrients and is also low in calories. Our raw spirulina consists of 74% whole plant protein with 18 amino acids. These play a crucial role in almost all biological functions of the body. That requires some explanation. 1 tub of Simpligreen contains 3.2 mg of iron, 18% of your daily requirement. This may sound like less than an iron supplement, but the effect is greater. The key to reducing iron deficiency is bioavailability. Simpligreen is 100% natural and raw and because of its special structure can be absorbed by your body up to 95%. Non-natural iron supplements only reach 10% on average.
No. Harmful substances occur in products that are cultivated in an uncontrolled environment. Our production facility is ISO, HACCP and BRC certified. In addition, through collaboration with leading academic and private research institutes, we have developed innovative testing tools, not yet common in the industry, to ensure that our spirulina is truly 100% pure.
Our raw spirulina is 74% complete protein, with all essential amino acids in perfect balance. Beef, for example, consists of 22% protein. Unlike other meat or vegetable protein sources, our spirulina has no hard cell walls (cellulose), making the spirulina protein and amino acids much easier for your body to absorb.
Most dry spirulina is made using a spray-drying method with hot gas, which converts the spirulina mass into powder. This process degrades the algae molecule and results in reduced nutritional values and enzymes - the latter also causing the notoriously unpleasant smell and taste of spirulina. About 40-50% of the nutritional value is lost about 45 days after it is dried. Some studies suggest that dried spirulina has only 15% of the nutritional value of fresh spirulina.
Our spirulina is grown under organic conditions in fresh water tanks in a closed, controlled system. It is not exposed to outside pollutants such as industrial waste, air pollution or acid rain, which is often the case in open environments. For dry spirulina animal manure is almost always used. However, only food grown in the ground can currently meet the USDA guidelines for organic classification. Then you also have to pasteurise and irradiate your product, which causes you to lose a lot of product quality. We are currently discussing a better solution that does justice to our product.
In a normal freezer like the one at home, you can keep our spirulina for about 8 months.
